It’s an important distinction to make

These days

Some times you want your identity to be known

Other times you may not

The Rocky Mountains are vast

The people living in them as diverse

As the ground cover and the critters

Who call it home

Survival is on the mind

And to keep friends close

The distinction is important to make

In order to have our country

Safe in our hearts

We might always make the distinction clear

And stand tall for what we believe

Fight if fighting is what

You do

Write if writing is what you do

Love if that’s what’s in you blood

Keep your mind clear

And speak your thoughts loud

The stars won’t mind if you holler

The grasslands will whisper back

Keep your water as clear

As your air

Keep your heart on your sleeve

Protect the idea

Reflect on what’s been done

And look for improvements to be made

It’s a privileged to be able to come out

Against the grain at the very least

You can be stoned in some cultures for that

“What are you reading?”

A simple enough question

But the subject of the book is not

It is the lived experiences of so many

Shunned by their societies social norms

The stories of so many

Asked to, no demanded to be ashamed

Of their “choices”

Can I even come out as one who is learning from them?

It’s a book titled “coming out like a porn star” it is many coming out stories of those making a living as a sex worker.

No, no I am not. My deviance only extends to an embrace of non-violence; to the path of seeking empathy that I hope will heal wounds inflicted by our cultural expectations.

I said this after you and your friend discussed another. Who was living on “red wine” specifically “cheap red wine from a box” the judgement overwhelmed the concern.

Following my statement about empathy; instead of returning to your red wine friend the conversation turns to something way more interesting; yourselves.
